Antimony is an effective flame retardant. Until recently, it was also an economic option. Antimony reacts with halogenated compounds during burning producing a different chemical compound that retards the flame. Prolonged exposure to antimony can cause organ damage and reproductive harms. It is a suspected carcinogen. Antimony also increases the amount of smoke and toxic gas released during a fire. Antimony is restricted by Cal. Prop 65 due to the reproductive harm it may cause and it being a possible carcinogen.
